The megacity Rises to Hazardous Pollution Following Celebrations
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Levels
Several parts of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which equals ten times the safe limit established by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to 15-20x above safe levels.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season begins.
Yet in recent months, the current regional government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Implementation
To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, judges approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst readings recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Effects
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever documented in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
The problem in the capital is caused by a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.
Health and Financial Toll
Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to various investigations.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing ten thousand untimely mortalities each year in the city.
